NYC Metro, Black and Blue

“So, let us not be blind to our differences - but let us also direct attention to our common interests and to the means by which those differences can be resolved.”

Entering the carriage, I was momentarily confused. What is this black sack doing in the train; Do I see an outline of a face? The sack, it’s moving, ever so slightly. It’s a burka! I sat down facing her.

At the next station, a young woman wearing a miniskirt entered the carriage and stood close by. What a contrast.

For the rest of the day, I kept thinking about person inside the burka. What does she think when she sees someone in a mini skirt or others wearing fashion clothing. Does she envy their freedom? Two women with nothing in common

That evening while editing the photo, it struck me. For the first time, I noticed the very fine blue hem on the burka, the exact color of the teenager’s skirt. Aha! A thread of fashion. Then it occurred to me that with the teenager wearing a black top, there clothing matched in color, just in different proportions.

Seeing the differences between the two was easy. Seeing the connection took work. Isn’t this always the case?
